Independent studio VAMPIRE – Digital Media today revealed the first official gameplay teaser for MOKI – The Escape, an atmospheric 2.5D puzzle-platformer planned for release on Steam in 2029. The trailer marks the public debut of the game and is accompanied by the opening of its Steam wishlist page.
In MOKI – The Escape, players awaken as Moki, a small creature with no memory, in a world that seems peaceful at first glance but hides a deeper, unsettling truth. Armed only with the Streak — an instinctive, short-range teleportation ability that unfolds new powers the further Moki travels — players will need to read the world around them rather than fight it, using intuition and environmental puzzles to get past hostile creatures and imposing bosses alike.
“After more than 20 years as a software developer and avid video game player, I wanted to try my hand at developing a video game myself. I’ve always been fascinated by imaginative games with a captivating and emotionally moving story. That’s exactly what I want to create with the Moki concept.”
Key Features
- The Gift of the Streak — A short-range teleportation ability that lets Moki pass through living foliage and energetic barriers, while solid stone and metal remain impassable.
- The Unfolding of the Streak — As the power grows, Moki can swap places with objects and even other creatures, opening up new paths and transforming the game’s puzzles.
- Intuition Over Might — Rather than combat, players use observation and environmental thinking to outmaneuver hazards, creatures, and bosses.
- Unique Characters — A cast of quirky, whimsical inhabitants, each with their own personality and emotional story.
- Moki’s Echo — An inner voice that surfaces in moments of doubt, guiding players when the way forward isn’t clear.
The game’s atmosphere is shaped in part by composer Jakob Wiersch, who wrote an original, exclusive soundtrack for the game.
MOKI – The Escape is the debut release from VAMPIRE – Digital Media, the studio of solo developer Markus Hermann, a software engineer who transitioned into indie game development in 2021 after more than a decade building embedded systems and enterprise tools. The game is self-funded, and this campaign — the studio’s very first marketing push — is intended to gauge audience interest ahead of future development milestones.
MOKI – The Escape does not yet have a public demo. The concept build previously available on itch.io predates the current build and is no longer representative of the game — press and creators are encouraged to focus on the teaser trailer and Steam page rather than the itch.io demo.
