Two Black Cats today unveiled MD Engine, a visual scripting tool built for one very specific dream: making it possible for anyone to design a real Mega Drive / Sega Genesis game, without writing a single line of code. MD Engine launches September 7, 2026, and the Steam page is open for wishlisting right now.

The idea borrows a page from GB Studio’s playbook, the tool that opened up Game Boy development to a wave of hobbyists, but points it at the 16-bit era instead. Drag, drop, and build platformers, shoot-‚em-ups, action RPGs, or puzzle games, then turn the result into a ROM that runs on original hardware, flash carts, and devices like the MegaSG or Retron3 HD. Creators who’d rather stay on modern platforms can target Web, Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, and iOS instead — Steam achievements included.

Under the hood, there’s a real-time debugger for anyone who wants to dig deeper: watch palettes shift, track variables, and follow event logic as it runs. A handful of projects are already taking shape with the tool, including Square Brothers, Inkventure, and Prisonela MD.
